The Liberty Loan flag is on the left with the big stars and the Service Flag is on the right. Each star (26) on the service flag represents someone from Trona who was in the service during World War I. One of the stars is either gold or silver. Gold would be for KIA and silver for wounded in action. The Service Flag in a more usual form was called a “Sons in Service Flag” and would have been displayed on the parents’ house. Apartment buildings organizations and small communities like Trona would display the multiple star flag like the one in the picture.
Does anyone have a list of names? The girl in this photo is Peggy Gauslin. When Peggy was twenty-five she became a pilot and flew in air shows. Peggy was the AP&CC photographer’s favorite model while she was in Trona. Perhaps that was because she was the plant manager’s daughter. The arches are part of Austin Hall.
