CAROLINE EDIEMAE (KEITH) BARRICK: CLASS OF 1959

Edie, as she was known to all her family, friends, and co-workers, was born in Mojave, California, to Clyde Emerson and Dorothy Elva Keith of Trona, San Bernardino County, California.

She did all of her elementary and secondary schooling in the Trona Joint Unified School District. The day after her 1959 high school graduation she drove herself the 125 miles to San Bernardino to start Skadron Business College and find employment. Within a very short time and several months before she turned 18, she accepted employment with a small but well-respected law firm in Rialto, California, where she would be trained on the job to be a legal secretary.

On July 2, 1960, she married her high school sweetheart, John Thomas (“Tommy”) Barrick, in service presided over by the pastor who had headed her Trona church when she and Tommy had first met. The ceremony took place in a small church in Rialto. Tommy had just returned from military duty in Munich, Germany, and mustered out of his Army enlistment. When he was unable to find employment in the vicinity of Rialto, he resumed his employment at the chemical plant in Trona. That meant that Edie drove back out to the desert on her weekends off and he drove down to Rialto on his “long changes”. The long-distance arrangement continued for almost 2 years.

They rented modest living quarters in Rialto for the first 4 years of their married life. Then they bought a house in San Bernardino. Their home was always welcoming to friends and family and the gathering place for every holiday and many other celebrations. However, they never had children.

Edie worked diligently at her career. She was critical support for five separate members of the local legal profession who successively terminated her employment as they received appointments to assume judicial office in San Bernardino. Only one lawyer-employer chose not to follow that path during her 1959 to 2001 career; she retired from his practice.

Edie attended and helped develop formal legal assistant/paralegal courses at the University of Southern California to augment the many years of on the job training she gained in legal practices concentrating on litigation, personal injury, family law, probate, and estate planning. Over the course of a 43 year career, she saw law office technology transition from manual typewriters through personal computers and computer networks.

She was active as a member and as an officer in the local, state and national professional associations for legal secretaries, paralegals, and legal assistants. In 1985 she was recognized as “Legal Secretary of the Year” by her peers and the legal community in San Bernardino.

In retirement she provided caregiver services to her husband who had been forced into early retirement by a vehicular accident in 1996. Due to health issues for both spouses, they became homebodies after 2006, and ultimately engaged professional caregivers in their home. Prior to 2006, they had traveled within 28 of the states, including Hawaii, and portions of Canada. Their 54-year marriage ended with her husband’s passing in 2014. She was a resident of San Bernardino County for her entire 76 years of life.

She is survived by her only sibling, Cheryl E. Keith, of Rancho Cordova, California; her cousin Terry Jane (Garrison) Fasana of Baldwin Park, California; her cousin Colleen Baker of St. George, Utah; her cousin Judith Hamblin of Henderson, Nevada; and many other cousins in Kansas, Nevada, Idaho, Ohio, and West Virginia.

Her internment was at Crestlawn Memorial Park in Riverside, California, on March 13, 2018.

George Modesto Garcia — Class of 1959

It saddens me to tell you that we have lost our friend and classmate, George Garcia. He died at his home in Walnut Creek yesterday. George was a Vietnam vet and a world traveler. He loved to travel and visited many countries, even returning to Vietnam a few years ago. He cherished his Trona friends and memories of growing up in our little town. He was loved and respected by all who were fortunate enough to call him friend.

He will be missed.

Linda Cunningham Monroe

George M. Garcia
Jan. 29, 1941 – Dec. 12, 2016

Resident of Walnut Creek

The nicest place to be is in someone’s thoughts, the safest place to be is in someone’s prayers, and the very best place to be is in the hands of God. George gracefully experienced all of this in his lifetime with a smile. George Garcia passed away peacefully at home after battling multiple myeloma, surrounded by his family. He was born to Modesto and Toribia Garcia in Trona, Ca. He always loved this little desert company town and often said he had the best childhood ever growing up there. He left after graduation for Los Angeles, worked for National Cash Register, married his high school sweetheart, Kathy Leisure, started college, was drafted into the Army, became a medic, and was sent to Vietnam. After being discharged, he made his way up the coast looking for employment and was hired by the City of Walnut Creek. He was then blessed with his three children, Joe, Annette and Mary. He worked for the City until he retired as the Traffic Supervisor, at the age of 60. After an earlier divorce, he met Carole Kelsch, who became his devoted life partner for the next 40 years. Along with working for the City, he received his Associates Degree, his electrical contractor’s license, built two cabins at Serene Lakes near Donner Summit, extensively remodeled the home he lived in, traveled on a mission trip to Africa to help build a birthing center, participated in a mission trip to Honduras, and had many more traveling adventures to Italy, France, Israel, Vietnam and various other countries. He was a board member of Diablo Valley Federal Credit Union for over 40 years, a board member in his mountain community of Serene Lakes for the water board and the property owners association, a member of SIRS Branch #19, served on the Mission Beyond Saint Matthew committee, skied, played golf, bocce, and loved Spring Training in AZ. George had the patience of Job, and with his engineering mind, he could fix anything. He was like the Pied Piper, as everyone from babies to older people loved him. George loved to dance, and even earlier this year he was out on the dance floor and could cut a rug with the best of them. His younger brother, Sam, died nine days before his death and George is now survived by two of eight siblings, Helen Arnold and Terri Mitsuoka. George leaves his best friend and beloved life partner, Carole Kelsch. Also, he leaves three children, Joseph Garcia (Nicole), Annette Robinson, and Mary van Loben Sels (Mark). He was so loved by Kim Szczurek (Norb) and Kristan Kelsch. His grandchildren were the greatest earthly gift given to him and he was Grandpa to Taylor, Jack, Andrew, Lucas, Gavin, Tobey, Thomas and Charlie, and was Papa to Sarah, Zachary and Hope. A memorial service celebrating George’s life will be held Saturday, January 7th, 11:00 am, at Saint Matthew Lutheran Church, 399 Wiget Lane, Walnut Creek, Ca. Lunch will follow. George was extremely proud to be a Vietnam Veteran and his ashes will be interred at the VA National Cemetery in Dixon. Memorial gifts in George’s honor may be sent to Saint Matthew Lutheran Church, Scholarship Fund, 399 Wiget Lane, Walnut Creek, Ca 94598 or Hospice East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Avenue, Pleasant Hill, Ca 94523.

Shirley (Thurston) Griffin – Class of 1959

Shirley (Thurston) Griffin class of 1959 passed away on Jan 5, 2014. Shirley was called to Heaven after a long battle with lymphoma.  She was born in Trona on Oct 23 1940 and attended school until she was in high school when her parents, Vernon (Ming or Salty) and Mickey sent her to a Christian boarding school.  After she was married her family resided in Trona or Ridgecrest on and off through the years.

Shirley Irene Thurston was born on October 23, 1940 in Trona, California to Vernon Samuel and Mickey (Mescal) Eunice Thurston.

Shirley showed her leadership and faith in God at an early age.  She was the first Christian in her family and began attending the Foursquare Church in Trona, by herself at age 12.  Through her example, her parents and sister came to know Christ.

She attended elementary school in Trona, the Seventh Day Adventist Jr. High in Ridgecrest, then Trona High School through her sophomore high school year.  Shirley then attended a Christian boarding school in Clovis, California; West Coast Bible School, where she graduated High School in 1958.

Shirley was active in the community and in her school.  She enjoyed Swimming, Basketball, Choir, Track/field and was an accomplished pianist.

She met Jerry Leroy Griffin at their church and then married this man who was to be the love of her life on January 1, 1962 at age 20 in the Church of God in Ridgecrest.

Shirley and Jerry pastored several small Church of God congregations in Victorville, California; Oroville, California; Yreka, California, Metlakatla, Alaska; Mount Pleasant, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; Westwood, California; Yuma, Arizona; ending their pastorate positions at Woodburn, Oregon.  In Westwood, she was only a few hours from receiving her solo pilot’s license to fly an airplane.  What a shame she wasn’t able to finish that great adventure.  During a visit to Alaska in 2010, one of the members of the small Metlakatla, Alaska church remembered her.  They spent over an hour reminiscing over old times and the fact that Jerry and Shirley facilitated the purchase of the land where the current church still worships.

Shirley had an independent spirit all throughout her life.  Starting as a child, she hiked all over the desert surrounding Trona.  She made many trips with friends, family and on her own.  She hiked the Sierra Mountains for two weeks by herself and traveled to China alone with a tour group and managed to ditch them along the way to see the sites she was interested in.  She took thousands of pictures from all over the world, documenting her life of amazing adventures.

At the time of her death she was attending Capital Christian Center in Sacramento, CA.  Shirley had an amazing capacity to love that was evident to all who met her.  She immediately accepted and loved every inherited grandchild when her sons remarried.  She was always careful to keep family close with her children’s respective spouses.   Shirley’s pure demonstration of love touched the hearts of all who knew her.  She finished the race of life with confidence and love for Jesus Christ, thankful for the saving grace of her Lord.

She is survived by her sister, Carol Dian (Dee) Burdine, daughter Janice, sons Vernon and Jerry, 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 5 nieces, 1 nephew, 17 great nieces and nephews and 2 great great nephews along with infinite extended family and friends.

Linda Billy Darneal – Class of 1959

Linda Darneal

This is old news but is new to me so I thought it was worth passing along.

Linda Billy (Darneal) Jones was born on August 11, 1941 in Ventura, California and passed away on January 12, 2010 with her family by her side.

Billy traveled down many paths in her life. She worked in the gaming business as a dealer and pit boss for over 40 years. She loved the game of golf. Billy worked at the golf course (that she adored so much) and accomplished two hole-in-ones. For many years, she owned the Ryndon Quarter Horse Ranch in Elko, Nevada where she bred and showed championship horses. Billy was also a very talented artist and enjoyed being on a bowling league for several years.

Billy was outspoken, courageous, and fearless. Her spunky personality and incredible ability to tell a funny joke would always fill the room with smiles and laughter. Her Fideaux joke will never be forgotton.

She was very passionate about her children, grandchildren, family and beloved animal friends. They meant the world to her. Billy had a tremendous love for her friends and always took care of them whenever she was needed.

Forever missing her love and warm heart are her mother, Wanda Darneal, sister Dinah Daane (John), children, Lyn Cerminaro (Mike), Jason Jones (Charlotte), Holly Jones, Erico Bisquera (Lori), grandchildren, Kayla, Logan, Ellie, Peyton, Koen, and baby Boies (to come), many loving friends, cousins, nephews, and her loyal companion Chasey.

She will be reunited with her father Calvin Darneal, brother-in-law Tony Cavalli, her best friends Myrt and Joan, and beloved horse Pardner.

A celebration of Billy’s life was held on January 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Christian Fellowship Church, 95 S. 1st Street, Wendover, Utah.
